Don't ever tell us we lack variety when it comes to game-to-screen adaptations at OMNIPLEX Cinemas. Following the successful third instalment of the 1990 adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog video game in January, this spring, we're diving into pixelated world of Minecraft!
Come April 4th, prepare to grab your pickaxes and dig deep into A Minecraft Movie, with Jason Momoa and Jack Black bringing the blocky sandbox sensation to life!
Minecraft is shaping up to be an epic adventure packed with Creepers, crafting, and comedy. Whatever your gaming tastes, OMNIPLEX has you covered.
As director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) explained to IGN, "This is a film made by people who love the game, know the game and just want to celebrate it in the most fun, ridiculous way possible."
The film follows four misfits who are grappling with the trials of everyday life. Just as they hit their breaking points, a mysterious portal whisks them into the Overworld - a strange, blocky landscape that thrives on creativity and collaboration. As they navigate this new world, they're guided by an unexpected expert craftier (played by Jack Black) on a quest that will test their courage and imagination. Along the way, they'll face classic Minecraft challenges, from Creepers to the legendary Ender Dragon, all while discovering how their unique talents can save the Overworld - and help them thrive back home.
A Minecraft Movie reimagines the game's ethos of exploration and innovation, bringing it to life with heart, humour, and plenty of blocky charm available to watch in OMNIPLEX from April 4th.
We already know Jack Black is a master of physical comedy and larger-than-life characters. From School of Rock to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, his versatility is undeniable. But his role as Steve in A Minecraft Movie might just be his most inspired performance yet, stepping into the shoes (or boots) of the iconic blocky hero from the Minecraft universe.
Describing Black as "as method as it gets" speaking with PC GAMER he revealed "I'd pop in there (the trailer) to go over the scene in the morning, and he would be dressed as Steve playing the game. It was kind of a surreal thing to behold."
"I've always wanted to take on a role that challenges me," Black wrote on Instagram in January 2024, alongside a picture of himself reading Minecraft Basics for Dummies. "An actor prepares." True to form, Black is diving into the character with his signature comedic flair, bringing Steve to life as he embarks on a magical quest through the Overworld with a team of misfits.
As Steve, Black's character will be more than just a player in the game - he's the guide, the mentor, and the quirky leader of the group. His interaction with the four misfits who get transported into the Minecraft world promises to deliver the humour, charm, and heart that Black fans have come to love.
In addition to Jack Black, the cast continues to expand with an impressive lineup. Jason Momoa joins the adventure, adding his trademark intensity to the mix, while Jennifer Coolidge, Kate McKinnon, and Jemaine Clement are also on board. Each brings their own comedic chops and distinctive style to this star-studded ensemble.
Expect plenty of laughs, adventure, and a whole lot of crafting as Black and his fellow actors navigate the wonders (and dangers) of the Minecraft universe.
Yes, A Minecraft Movie is likely to be suitable for all ages, especially given the game's broad appeal to both children and adults. The Minecraft franchise has always been family-friendly, and it's expected that the movie will follow this tradition by maintaining an accessible and engaging tone for viewers of all ages.
"We made animated content before and there's a lot of it out there which is also one of the reasons why it made us wanted to go with live action rather than animated, rather than do something that's been done before," Senior Creative of Director of Entertainment, Torfi Frans Ólafsson told IGN.
"This movie has been in development for a very long time, a lot of the people who will see it will not have been born when the first discussions (about production) were had," he added.
Founded in 2009, Mojang founded the video game of Minecraft, lead by chief creative officer (Jeb) Bergensten, who, has seen parts of the film already.
Speaking with Dexerto.com Jeb explained that the Minecraft movie being directed by Jared Hess, is "very much (his) vision". However, Mojang has been collaborating with the director, particularly on the script and main story points, ensuring Minecraft stays true to its roots, ahead of its release on the big screen in April.
"We've been part of working on the script and the main story points and trying to emphasize the things we feel are important for Minecraft," Jeb elaborated.
"Not only were they a part of the creative process behind the movie, but Jeb was able to visit the physical set of the movie during a visit in February, ensuring the visual style is on brand as well."
